Points system in Formula 1

Points decide championships — and in F1, you only get them if you finish high enough. Both the Grand Prix and the Sprint race have their own scoring.

How many points are given in a Grand Prix?

The top 10 finishers score points:

PositionPoints
1st25
2nd18
3rd15
4th12
5th10
6th8
7th6
8th4
9th2
10th1

What about Sprint races?

The top 8 drivers score points in the Sprint:

PositionPoints
1st8
2nd7
3rd6
8th1

Sprint points do count toward the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

Is there a point for fastest lap?

Yes — 1 extra point for the fastest lap in the Grand Prix, but only if the driver finishes in the top 10. (No bonus for fastest lap in Sprint.)

Do you get points for qualifying?

No — qualifying just sets the grid. Only race results give points.

What if the race is shortened?

If less than 75% of the race distance is completed, reduced points may be awarded. If the race doesn’t reach two laps under green flag, no points are given.
