Penalty points on super licence in Formula 1

Every F1 driver holds an FIA Super Licence — and just like a real-world licence, they can get penalty points for bad behavior. Rack up too many, and you’re banned.

What are penalty points?

Points given for on-track infractions, like:

  • Causing a collision
  • Ignoring flags
  • Dangerous driving
  • Repeated track limits violations

They’re separate from time or grid penalties — and go on the driver’s Super Licence record.

How long do they stay?

Each penalty point stays on the record for 12 months from the date of the offence.

How many points = race ban?

If a driver reaches 12 points within 12 months, they receive an automatic one-race suspension.

So far, no F1 driver has ever hit the limit — but some have come close.

Can drivers see how many points they have?

Yes — the FIA tracks and publishes each driver’s total. Teams monitor it closely too.

Why does this system exist?

To encourage cleaner racing and discourage repeat offenders. It adds accountability beyond in-race penalties.
