Constructors’ vs. Drivers’ Championship in Formula 1

Every F1 season has two championships up for grabs — one for the drivers, and one for the teams. Both matter, but for very different reasons.

What is the Drivers’ Championship?

Awarded to the driver who scores the most points over the season.

It’s all about individual performance — consistency, wins, podiums. This is the title that makes you a World Champion.

What is the Constructors’ Championship?

Goes to the team that scores the most points across both of its cars.

Every point from both drivers counts toward the team total — not just one car.

How are points scored?

Both championships use the same points system:

  • Grand Prix: Top 10 drivers score
  • Sprint: Top 8 drivers score
  • But in the Constructors’, both drivers’ results are added together

Which title matters more?

To fans: Drivers’ Championship
To teams (and their accountants): Constructors’ Championship

Why? Because the prize money and future funding are tied to where teams finish in the Constructors’ standings.

Can a driver win the championship even if their team doesn’t?

Yes — and it’s happened several times. The best driver can outscore rivals even if their teammate underperforms.

Can teammates be in the title fight together?

Definitely. But that often leads to tension, as only one can take the crown — think Hamilton vs. Rosberg or Vettel vs. Webber.
